Amanda Wares
Amanda Wares and her husband, Michael, have been on the NCHE board for five years, four of those as region 5 directors, and Amanda currently serves as activities director. They make their home in Greensboro, where Michael owns a cold-storage warehouse, and Amanda homeschools their four busy children! Susannah, eighteen, is their first homeschool graduate and is a freshman at Belhaven University, studying dance. The three children at home are Killian, thirteen, Katrielle, eleven, and Deacon, five. This is the Wares' tenth year homeschooling. Michael's background is in computer engineering, and Amanda was a sign language interpreter. Now, she enjoys teaching sign language at their local homeschool enrichment classes. Amanda is also passionate about encouraging new homeschool moms.
NCHE Scholarships Awarded
In December 2011, forty-eight homeschool seniors sent application packets to be considered for one of six scholarships that NCHE administers. Transcripts, SAT or ACT scores, two letters of recommendation and a personal essay were required from each student. A committee carefully examined each packet, ranking each one. Those rankings were then compiled and the winners were chosen. We at NCHE are blessed to be able to administer these scholarships each year, and it is amazing to see the level of scholarship and talent among the applicants.
The NCHE scholarship is a $1,000 award funded by member contributions to the scholarship fund. There are two awards offered each year.

Carson Sherer Kay, daughter of Toby and Emily Kay of Mill Spring, received an NCHE scholarship. Carson plans to attend Berry College to study animal science.![]()
Andrew Neal Thomas, son of Benji and Anne Hope Thomas of Morganton, also received an NCHE scholarship. Drew will be attending Western Carolina University’s Honors College majoring in entrepreneurial business.

HINTS support group scholarships are donated by the Charlotte group and are awarded to students who are members of a local homeschool support group. Two of these scholarships are given annually.
- Arna McArtney, daughter of Steve and Anne McArtney of Pisgah Forest, was awarded one of the HINTS scholarships. Arna has been accepted into the Templeton Honors College at Eastern University where she will be majoring in economic development.

- Paul Rankin, son of Allen and Laura Rankin of Charlotte, also received a HINTS scholarship. Paul plans to attend UNC Charlotte to study electrical engineering.
The Apologia Mission Scholarship is for students who plan to be trained in ministry or missions after graduation. 
This year the $1,000 award was given to Danielle Renee Wilson, daughter of Andrew and Heather Wilson of Apex. For the 2012-2013 school year, Danielle will be interning at the Shiphrah Birthing home in Manila, Phillipines, where she will receive training as a midwife while serving as a missionary. She then hopes to attend Newlife International School of Midwifery in Manila the following year as a missionary midwifery student.
The Lassiter Scholarship is donated by Donnie and Linda Lassiter and is a renewable $1,000 award. Ellie Mestas, daughter of Jerry and Eileen Mestas of Wake Forest, was chosen to receive this scholarship. Ellie plans to attend Mount Olive College, completing prerequisites to enter the Watts School of Nursing.
The scholarship committee is happy to announce the 2012 awards and offers their congratulations to all the winners.

GREENHOUSE magazine is published quarterly, with an annual graduate special issue published in May. That's five issues, each containing at least 40 pages of full color for $3 an issue.
